WARNING: NO BARS - André 3000's New Blue Sun
What a time for André 3000 fans all over the world. On the edge of our seats for months after the rumor mill started buzzing with word that Dre had an album on the way. We waited with insane anticipation for what was to come. I think many of us believed it was too good to be true…
And, well, it kinda was.
Because Sir 3 Stacks has always kept a low profile, (aside from the recent sightings of him playing his flute all over the world… which now seems like a giant CLUE we all missed) no one ever really knows what he’s up to. Occasionally he pops out on a feature with someone and leaves us with a little reminder that he is still here and he DEFINITELY still has it. 🤌🏽 But never an album of his own, until now… and when it finally released, it came with a warning. NO BARS.
TF, ANDRÉ!?
I didn’t get it. How could he release an album with NO BARS, when all he does is DROP BARS!? But in true André 3000 fashion, he just had to do his own thing. As disappointed as I was, he is a true artist, and I stan ANYTHING that comes from the pure genius and raw talent that is him.
So when it dropped, I sprinted (metaphorically, obviously) to Spotify and searched it up. I read the title of the first track, and instantly forgave him for releasing such blasphemy. “I Swear, I Really Wanted To Make a ‘Rap’ Album, but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time.”
((THE BARS ARE IN THE TITLES, Y’ALL. GENIUS.))
Pressing play, I really had no clue what to expect, but I got in the zone, committed, and let it ride. And I have to say, I kinda got lost in it. It’s a whole vibe. A very specific one, but it isssss. This album did something for my soul, y’all. Typical Dre. It’s funky, it’s calming, it’s smooth, and also inspiring. I love it.
And I think that goes to show that when you create from a genuine place, you MOVE people. And while I still hold a slight, okay no, a huge grudge that he’s over there sitting on decades’ worth of raps, (which he claims he isn’t… not buying it!) Dre delivered something that this world desperately needs right now. It’s a breath of fresh air, a reminder to slow down, a peaceful little escape from this heavy, nonstop existence we are all so caught up in.
Now, I just want to hear some dope artists put some bars over it, or Dre himself… PLEASE. Why not keep it going, you know?! Anyway, please go listen… with an open mind. And maybe a joint. Or a glass of wine. Whatever your thing is. ;)
Can’t wait to hear what y’all think.
